About Steve Balkun
I have been a woodcarver for the past 30 years. I first studied with sculptor/artist George Hanover for 15 years until he retired. I love working in many styles and with a variety of woods and each present a unique challenge to create something beautiful that also enhances the inner beauty of the wood itself. Although I sometimes use power tools I prefer to carve with hand tools. The sounds of the tools slicing the wood or the mallet striking the end of the gouge is part of the sensory experience of carving. The peaceful, meditative component of carving is what I enjoy most. I reference the human form in many of my carvings. My abstract and functional carvings tend to have flowing lines and repeated patterns. I also carve stone occasionally but wood is my first love and my preferred medium. I teach woodcarving to students of all ages and skill levels in my home studio.
